Yachtmaster Offshore TL4 - Direct Assessment

 

The Yachtmaster Offshore TL4 by direct assessment or short course has the following pre-requisites for experienced yachtsmen and women:-

                    

1.      Must be able to demonstrate to the acceptability of the QYA satisfactory experience and skill as would be required by Offshore Yachtsperson

2.      Must be able to prove that they do not suffer from colour blindness

3.      Should have, or will be required to complete, the Radio Certificate of Proficiency and be able to demonstrate proficiency in this regard.  A copy of the certificate on issue will be required.

4.      Full knowledge and understanding of the Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea - this will be examined and is essential for successful completion of the program

5.      Must possess a current first aid certificate

6.      Should hold or obtain a certificate in coastal navigation or be able to provide evidence of having undertaken navigation course/s to an acceptable standard and be competent with navigation theory and practice (not celestial)

7.      Preferably has completed the course "elements of ship-board safety" or "workplace health and safety (marine)"

8.      Preferably has completed Master V "Radar"

9.      Essential experience that must be logged and evidenced includes:

·        50 days aboard a yacht in commission

·        2500 nautical miles logged including three passages of over 60 nautical miles, and two passages of over 60 nautical miles logged for the duration of which the candidate must have been acting as skipper and which must have included overnight passages.

·        The above to include offshore passages

 

Candidates attention is drawn to Page 62 of the TL4 Logbook the conditions of which must be fully demonstrated and met before examination.

 

In any situation where the candidate with advanced standing is ready for examination, with the exception of only minor points, then a program of work can be arranged to meet the requirements accordingly.  Please enquire as necessary.

 

Candidates may be required to undertake a pre-qualifying examination.

 

Candidates should expect to undertake a practical and theory examination (verbal and written) to demonstrate knowledge and practical skills in the areas required.  This will normally entail an offshore overnight passage with sufficient time and distance sailed in varying conditions to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required incorporating night navigation and sailing.
