In Queensland, licences are required
when operating boats powered by a motor of over six horsepower. This requirement is extended to all
boats powered by a motor of over six horsepower including sailing yachts
and displacement cruisers. PREREQUISITES To obtain a Recreational Ship

The Australian Boating
Manual – Dick Gandy APPROVED COURSE This course aims to equip
participants with the minimum necessary knowledge and skills to safely operate a
power driven vessel. The course is conducted in classroom
and practical on the water and will cover at an introductory level: COURSE STRUCTURE You will receive course notes and
the ‘Wet Paper” Power Boating Self Study Guide. Queensland Transport Publications will
be also made available to you. This course is conducted over
approximately twelve hours. A more
comprehensive (18 hour) course is also available and it is recommended that you
undertake the more advanced TL3 Motor Boat course as approved by the A.Y.F. EXAMINATION A written examination is conducted
at the end of the course. This will be
linked to a practical assessment on the water. Successful candidates will
receive a course completion form which, upon presentation to a Queensland
Transport Customer Service Centre, and payment of $30.00, will lead to the issue
of a Recreational Ship Master’s Licence. COSTS Cost is $110 plus $15 for
resources.
The TL3 Power Boating
Course is an AYF Log Book based course in power boat handling. It is an extension to improved
competency on the RSML course and will involve class room work and on water
exercises. You will receive a TL3
logbook, Wet Papers, Power Boating Study Guide and a certificate on
completion. Recommended: The Australian Boating Manual

Prerequisite: RSML COSTS - $150.00
This program is an endorsement to
the TL3 Power boating Certificate. An AYF course that can lead to
Coxswain (Restricted) recognition.
You will be provided the RYA Safety Boat Book and undertake significant
on water training as well as off water instruction. Nominal 20 hours. On completion you will receive the
Rescue Boat Endorsement. Prerequisites: RSML TL3 First Aid and Resuscitation; and
(current) Marine Radio Operators
Certificate of Competency.

A statement of Attainment for
“Occupational Health and Safety at Sea” is a prerequisite for all
commercial
qualifications up to
and including Master Class 4. It is
highly recommended for those pursuing recreational maritime training and we ask
those undertaking preparation for TL4 (Yachtsmaster) to do this course. There are no prerequisites for this
course although those undertaking it should have reasonable fitness, be able to
swim and have no medical conditions that may be affected. The course aims to develop an
awareness of workplace health and safety issues in the maritime industry and an
ability to cope efficiently and effectively with emergency situations on
board. In addition to classroom
workshops, the course includes practical training in the use of life jackets and
life rafts, fire fighting and flare activation. The course is conducted over 20
hours. Assessment is ongoing throughout the
course and a certificate will be issued on competent completion. COURSE VENUES AND
